Consumer Health Care Information
Marian Hank justhank@mcs.com
Health Care Information is not hard to find on the Internet.
What is hard is sorting through the vast amount of materials
available when you are looking for information on a specific
subject. The other challenge is finding information geared
toward the lay person instead of the medical professional. So
the focus of this article is on the index style pages that are
designed to help you sort through the wide array of medical
information at your disposal. We'll start with some of the best
of the general resources and then focus on some of the sites
that index more specific types of health resources.
Good General Indexes
Yahoo's Health section
This is extensive and well-organized. It doesn't take
long to skim the categories and narrow your search or use
their search engine to hone in on the topic that
interests you.
Achoo!
The first thing that appealed to me about this site is
the name. They index over 5000 medical sites and divided
into 3 general categories. Although this index is not
*specifically* geared toward consumers, it is easy for
anyone to use.
GNN's Health and Medicine Index
A well organized index that features the ten most popular
health sites people visit.
Global Health Network
In addition to providing extensive and organized link
indexes, the goals of the network are interesting.
The Global Health Network (GHNet) is an alliance of experts in
health and telecommunications who are actively developing the
architecture for a health information structure for the prevention
of disease in the 21st century. The professionals involved in GHNet
bring together expertise from the essential areas of government,
international organizations, business, and academia. All are
dedicated individuals, recognized in their fields, who have donated
large amounts of time to this project.
Med Web
This site is geared toward medical proffessionals, but
the page we are linking to is an extensive listing of
internet resources.
The Virtual Hospital- Other Internet Resources
This web site and this index is designed for both people
in the medical field and consumers, and has an
interesting array of resources.
Internet Health Guide
This index is extensive and arranged by topic. It is very
easy to follow and quite extensive.
Hospitals
Hospital Web
Looking for information on hospitals in your area? Try
this web, which is regionally organized and also features
an "Interesting Medical Site of the Week."
Hospital Net
Another index of hospitals, which also features a nice
list of outside resources.
Women and Children First
Online Birth Center
Midwifery, Pregnancy, Birth and Breastfeeding are the
topics covered in this web. It is an excellent resource
featuring solid content on each of the subjects and a
nice index of other places to find information on
pregnancy, childcare and parenting.
Mother-heart Health and Wholeness
Provides lots of links to unique alternative medicine
resources. Definitely built from a feminine angle.
A Forum for Women's Health
This site features articles on women's health, a section
where you can ask a woman doctor, and an index of
favorite links.
Kidsource Health Index
Links and article for general child safety and wellness
are featured on this page.
PedInfo
This is one of the most comprehensive indexes of
pediatric information available on the internet.
And for the Men
Men's Health
This index page points to websites that cover a variety
of men's phyiscal and mental health issues.
Men's Health Issues
This short list of topics covers a few more issues not
touched upon in the previous resource.
Alternative Medicine
Alternative Medicine Homepage
"This page is a jumpstation for sources of information on
unconventional, unorthodox, unproven, or alternative,
complementary, innovative, integrative therapies."
Ask NOAH:Alternative medicine
This index lists some more resources for exploring
different approaches to health.
Other Great Resources
In my quest for the general, I hit upon a few specific issue
sites that seem to be solid resources. There are many, many
more good pages on health issues of all sorts, and quite a few
of them are available through the indexes above.
The Alzheimer's Association
This site provides solid content on Alzheimer's and links
to sites relating to the topic.
Virtual Library - Pharmacy
Although most of the information on the page is geared
toward practicing and potential pharmacists, the database
section provides links to many sites that will be of
interest to consumers.
Doing the research for this has reminded me that the web is a
pretty darn big place! Health care resources abound and this is
a category that is only going to explode as more and more
medical professionals and institutions join the Internet
community. The best part of this is that consumers have never
had a better opportunity to obtain information about
maintaining a most precious resource - good health.
