  34.           Health Care Information is not hard to find on the Internet.
  35.           What is hard is sorting through the vast amount of materials
  36.           available when you are looking for information on a specific
  37.           subject. The other challenge is finding information geared
  38.           toward the lay person instead of the medical professional. So
  39.           the focus of this article is on the index style pages that are
  40.           designed to help you sort through the wide array of medical
  41.           information at your disposal. We'll start with some of the best
  42.           of the general resources and then focus on some of the sites
  43.           that index more specific types of health resources.

  46.           Yahoo's Health section
  47.                 This is extensive and well-organized. It doesn't take
  48.                 long to skim the categories and narrow your search or use
  49.                 their search engine to hone in on the topic that
  50.                 interests you.

  52.           Achoo!
  53.                 The first thing that appealed to me about this site is
  54.                 the name. They index over 5000 medical sites and divided
  55.                 into 3 general categories. Although this index is not
  56.                 *specifically* geared toward consumers, it is easy for
  57.                 anyone to use.

  59.           GNN's Health and Medicine Index
  60.                 A well organized index that features the ten most popular
  61.                 health sites people visit.

  63.           Global Health Network
  64.                 In addition to providing extensive and organized link
  65.                 indexes, the goals of the network are interesting.

  67.      The Global Health Network (GHNet) is an alliance of experts in
  68.      health and telecommunications who are actively developing the
  69.      architecture for a health information structure for the prevention
  70.      of disease in the 21st century. The professionals involved in GHNet
  71.      bring together expertise from the essential areas of government,
  72.      international organizations, business, and academia. All are
  73.      dedicated individuals, recognized in their fields, who have donated
  74.      large amounts of time to this project.

  78.                 the page we are linking to is an extensive listing of
  79.                 internet resources.

  83.                 in the medical field and consumers, and has an
  84.                 interesting array of resources.

  88.                 easy to follow and quite extensive.

  92.                 Looking for information on hospitals in your area? Try
  93.                 this web, which is regionally organized and also features
  94.                 an "Interesting Medical Site of the Week."

  97.                 Another index of hospitals, which also features a nice
  98.                 list of outside resources.

  100.         Women and Children First
  101.           Online Birth Center
  102.                 Midwifery, Pregnancy, Birth and Breastfeeding are the
  103.                 topics covered in this web. It is an excellent resource
  104.                 featuring solid content on each of the subjects and a
  105.                 nice index of other places to find information on
  106.                 pregnancy, childcare and parenting.

  108.           Mother-heart Health and Wholeness
  109.                 Provides lots of links to unique alternative medicine
  110.                 resources. Definitely built from a feminine angle.

  112.           A Forum for Women's Health
  113.                 This site features articles on women's health, a section
  114.                 where you can ask a woman doctor, and an index of
  115.                 favorite links.

  117.           Kidsource Health Index
  118.                 Links and article for general child safety and wellness

  122.                 This is one of the most comprehensive indexes of
  123.                 pediatric information available on the internet.

  145.           In my quest for the general, I hit upon a few specific issue
  146.           sites that seem to be solid resources. There are many, many
  147.           more good pages on health issues of all sorts, and quite a few
  148.           of them are available through the indexes above.

  150.           The Alzheimer's Association
  151.                 This site provides solid content on Alzheimer's and links
  152.                 to sites relating to the topic.

  154.           Virtual Library - Pharmacy
  155.                 Although most of the information on the page is geared
  156.                 toward practicing and potential pharmacists, the database
  157.                 section provides links to many sites that will be of
  158.                 interest to consumers.
  159.  
  160.           Doing the research for this has reminded me that the web is a
  161.           pretty darn big place! Health care resources abound and this is
  162.           a category that is only going to explode as more and more
  163.           medical professionals and institutions join the Internet
  164.           community. The best part of this is that consumers have never
  165.           had a better opportunity to obtain information about
  166.           maintaining a most precious resource - good health.
